Privacy Policy
This is the privacy policy for LerneQ, the German articles app published by Mykola Korzh ("we", "us"). It covers the iPhone and iPad app distributed on the Apple App Store and the Android app distributed on Google Play. It is the only privacy policy for LerneQ; any older copy you find elsewhere is out of date.
The short version: LerneQ is a vocabulary app. It has no advertising, we do not sell your data, and you can use the entire app without ever creating an account. If you do sign in, it is so your progress can follow you to a new phone.
Using LerneQ without an account
Signing in is optional. If you skip it, your learning progress, streak and settings stay on your device only. Nothing is written to our cloud database, because there is no account to attach it to. Anonymous analytics and crash reporting still apply, as described below.
What we collect
Account information, only if you sign in
LerneQ offers two ways to sign in: Sign in with Google and Sign in with Apple. There is no email-and-password option. When you use one of them, the provider gives us:
- Your email address, which we use to show you which account you are signed into. If you use Sign in with Apple and choose "Hide My Email", we only ever see Apple's relay address.
- Your name, where the provider supplies it, used to greet you in the app.
- A user ID generated by Firebase Authentication, which is how your synced data is filed.
We do not receive or store your password, and we do not request your contacts, photos, location, camera or microphone.
Learning data
If you are signed in, the following is synced to Google Cloud Firestore under your user ID so it survives a reinstall or a new device:
- Which cards you have covered, your quiz accuracy, and which words you got wrong
- Spaced repetition scheduling for each card, and your study session history
- Your daily streak and daily goal
- App settings: interface language, theme, sound, haptics, speech, and your reminder time
Your email address and name are not written into this database. The only link between it and you is the user ID in the path.
Usage and diagnostics
- Analytics (Google Analytics for Firebase): we record which screens you open and which actions you take, such as starting a lesson, finishing a quiz, or viewing the subscription screen. Alongside these we store three properties: whether you have an active subscription, your chosen interface language, and whether this is a first launch. We do not attach your email, name or user ID to analytics events.
- Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics): if the app crashes we receive the error, a stack trace, and basic device and OS information so we can fix it. We do not attach an identifier of you to crash reports.
- Device and app information: device model, operating system version, app version, and country, collected by the services above.
Advertising identifier on Android
LerneQ shows no ads and contains no advertising SDK. However, the Google Analytics for Firebase library bundled in the Android app declares the Android advertising ID permission, and Google may use that identifier for analytics attribution. We do not use it to target advertising, build advertising profiles, or share it with advertisers. You can reset or delete your advertising ID at any time in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads.
Purchases
Subscriptions are billed by Apple on iPhone and iPad and by Google Play Billing on Android. We never see your card number or billing address. The store confirms to us only that a subscription is active, when it renews, and whether a free trial has been used.
We use RevenueCat to manage subscription state across devices. When you are signed in, your Firebase user ID is sent to RevenueCat so a subscription you bought on one device unlocks the app on another. RevenueCat receives purchase and receipt data, store country, and device and OS information. We do not send RevenueCat your email address or your name.
Notifications
Study reminders are scheduled locally on your device. LerneQ does not use push notifications, and there is no push token to collect or transmit. Reminder content never leaves your phone. If you are signed in, the on/off setting and the time you picked are synced as part of your settings so a new device keeps them.
Who we share data with
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. Data reaches only these processors, each in order to make a specific feature work:
- Google (Firebase Authentication, Firestore, Analytics, Crashlytics, Remote Config), for sign-in, sync, product analytics and crash reporting. See the Firebase privacy documentation and the Google Privacy Policy.
- RevenueCat, for subscription management. See the RevenueCat Privacy Policy.
- Apple, for App Store distribution and billing on iPhone and iPad. See the Apple Privacy Policy.
- Google Play, for Android distribution and billing. See the Google Privacy Policy.
We may also disclose information if we are legally required to, or to protect our rights. If LerneQ were ever sold or transferred, we would give notice in the app before your data moved.
Where your data is processed
Our processors are US companies and your data may be processed in the United States and other countries. For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, these transfers rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and, where applicable, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
How long we keep it
- While your account exists: your synced learning data is kept so the app works across devices.
- After you delete your account: your account record and synced learning data are deleted immediately. See Delete your account for exactly what goes and what stays.
- Analytics: retained by Google for up to 14 months from your last activity, then deleted automatically.
- Crash reports: retained by Google for up to 90 days.
- Purchase records: retained by Apple, Google and RevenueCat for as long as tax and accounting law requires, typically up to 10 years. We cannot delete these on request; they are a legal obligation, not a choice.
- Data on your device: stays until you delete the app or clear its storage.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to give you a copy of your data, correct it, or delete it. Under the GDPR, if you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, you specifically have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection, and the right to complain to your local data protection authority. Under the CCPA and CPRA, if you are in California, you have the rights to know, delete, correct, and opt out of sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information as those laws define it, so there is nothing to opt out of.
The fastest way to erase your data is deleting your account, which you can do inside the app or by email. For anything else, write to lerneq.app@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days.
Our legal basis for processing, where the GDPR applies, is: performing our contract with you, for your account and your subscription; our legitimate interest in a working, debuggable product, for analytics and crash reporting; and your consent, for notifications, which you can withdraw in your device settings at any time.
Children
LerneQ is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email lerneq.app@gmail.com and we will delete it.
Security
Data in transit is encrypted with TLS. Data at rest with our processors is encrypted using their standard encryption. Access to the Firebase console is protected by two-factor authentication. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep the amount of personal data we hold deliberately small: no passwords, no payment details, and no personal information in the learning database.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change materially affects how we handle your data, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
